Раболепствовать. Известно, что крестьяне в Средние века были неграмотными людьми, хотя дворяне тоже не отличались особой образованностью и аккуратностью, и чтобы скрыть свое невежество, они придумывали различные ритуалы. В то время при дворе существовало множество церемоний. Каждая из них проводилась по строго заведённым правилам. Так, например, представленные королю должны были сделать низкий поклон и одновременно отставить одну ногу назад. Это требовало немалого мастерства, т. к. одно неловкое движение могло привести к тому, что человек падал. Поэтому люди, направляющиеся во дворец впервые, должны были тренироваться до тех пор, пока они не чувствовали себя уверенными в искусстве поклона и шарканья (bowing and scraping). Король и его приближённые принимали такое выражение подобострастия как должное. Люди более низкого происхождения тоже часто пытались льстить даже мелкому чиновнику. Это было распространённым явлением. Но уже с 1650 г. это словосочетание использовалось в переносном значении для описания раболепного поведения.
